Kochi, July 16: When improperly disposed of sanitary napkins
contribute significantly to toxic waste in the country, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden has
joined hands with the Indian Medical Association and the Muthoot Finance to
launch a campaign titled ‘Cup of Life’, which
aims to distribute menstrual cups to more than one lakh beneficiaries in Ernakulam
Parliamentary constituency for free within 24 hours in August.
campaign will be conducted from the evening of August 30 to August 31 evening.
Muthoot Finance is funding the project under its CSR initiative. The Ernakulam
district administration is also supporting the project. The first-of-its-kind
initiative has identified 100 venues in the district for the cup distribution.
The project plans
to create awareness in the coming one and a half months about menstrual hygiene
and the availability of consumer-friendly, sustainable, eco-friendly and
cost-effective menstrual cups. The awareness will be through art and cultural
programmes at various venues. Six trained volunteers of IMA Kochi will explain
how to use the menstrual cup and clarify doubts at various venues in Kochi.
Mr Hibi Eden
said that the success of a pilot project in the Kumbalangi grama panchayat
prompted him to take it to the entire district. In the pilot project awareness
programmes were conducted in all the 17 wards of the panchayat, and 4,000 cups
were distributed. He said that such initiatives will help women’s empowerment. Alexander George Muthoot, managing
director of Muthoot Finance, said that the organization was happy associating
with the project. Voluntary organisations and colleges interested in setting up
venues may register by dialling 0484-3503177.
