Gadgets galore to help doctors, patients at expo

Kochi, June 24: If drilling of teeth produces a noise that can scare patients, a higher-education institution in Thrissur district has come up with a solution. The dentist’s clinic can be a pleasant experience what with the hand-piece generating a lower-frequency sound, going by its display at the health expo at the ‘Health Tech Summit 2022’ held in Kochi on June 24.

Besides this instrument, students at Sahrdaya College of Engineering and Technology in Kodakara have come up with a robot that facilitates physical exercise for autistic children and play with them too. “The automated machine is also programmed to give pep talk,” reveals Minsha M.Z., who is doing BTech in medical technology at the two-decade-old institution based 20 km south of Thrissur town. “It can also distribute gifts.”

More such gadgets at June 24th national conclave here demonstrate the advances Kerala has been making in medical technology. With Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) as the chief organiser along with Kerala’s Ministry of Health and Caritas Hospital, the summit at Le Meridian featured 30 pavilions of companies from different parts of the country.

Innovative ideas came in from hospitals that work in association with the two-decade-old Sahrdaya, informed its lecturer Dr Remya George. Her colleague Prof Jibin Jose said: “The robot entertains not just kids, but benefits old people who lead a lonely life.”

With 35 speakers across a dozen presentations and panel discussions, HealthTech Summit 2022 aimed to capitalise the prospects of the state’s status as a frontrunner in wellness. The other partners are IT Kerala, State Family Welfare Department, eHealth Kerala and technology business incubator TIMed.

While CDAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) exhibited CerviSCAN that enables early detection of cervical cancer, the other gadgets at the HealthTech Summit were medtra’s Veineux AR 100 which facilitates accurate assessment of real-time situation of peripheral veins before, during and after piercing, Krieger intelligent UV Disinfection systems by Juxtasim Technologies, Desinotox’s patient transfer hoist device that assists in lifting and transferring individuals with limited mobility and Sukh Prasavam by SheBirth which works to help doctors identify pregnancy complications.
